What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) is a regulation in EU law on data protection & privacy for all individual citizens of the European Union (EU) & the European Economic Area (EEA). It also addresses the transfer of personal data outside the EU and EEA areas.

Who are we?

GenealogyWings is a small, independent, non-commercial, privately-funded & privately-run family history website.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to document & publish online the ancestry of the families, by researching & recording as much as we can of the life of individuals, and to share that information with family members. We also publish the data of our ancestors to benefit other family history researchers, and in the hope that they may contact us with more information about them.

We aim to be transparent in the way we process your personal information & that of living family members. If you have concerns or questions that aren’t addressed elsewhere in this document, please use the Contact Form to let us know.

Data protection

The owners of this site take the protection of your personal data very seriously. We treat your personal data confidentially and in accordance with the statutory data protection regulations and this privacy policy.

The use of our website is possible without providing personal data. When personal information is requested (for example, name and email address on the contact form), this is given voluntarily. This data will not be passed on to third parties.

We point out that sending information over the Internet is subject to security issues. Complete protection of the data from being accessed by third parties is not possible.

Secure Connection

With the purchase of an SSL certificate, the owners of this website have gone to the expense of providing you with an encrypted (HTTPS) connection every time you visit this website, the same as banks & other sites do.

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and, in short, it's the standard technology for keeping an internet connection secure, by safeguarding any sensitive data that is being sent between you & and us, preventing anyone else from reading & modifying any information transferred between us, including personal details.
It does this by making sure that any data transferred between you & us remain impossible to read. It uses encryption algorithms to scramble data in transit, preventing anyone else from reading it as it is sent over the Internet.

HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) appears in the URL of your web browser when a website is secured by an SSL certificate. The details of our SSL certificate, including the issuing authority, can be viewed by clicking on the lock symbol on your web browser bar. You can also click on the yellow Positive SSL banner at the bottom of most pages on our website for more information.

GDPR Privacy

The EU GDPR and Data Privacy regulations are interpreted by many genealogy sites as referring exclusively to the relationship between the site’s data controller & the people registered to use their site. That much is true, and our site’s data privacy arrangements meet those needs.

There is another, much-larger group of data subjects: the living people in our family tree. Our Privacy Statement cares for them too.

A family tree would be severely diminished if it did not include the latest generations, so this site contains details of living people. Their details are not displayed to people who access the site anonymously, and login is only available to family members who subscribe, and are manually approved by the site administrator.

The web hosting administrator at A2 Website Hosting where is hosted has access for administrative-purposes, as does the support team for the TNG genealogy software that this website uses. We regard these as trusted resources who also work to robust data security & privacy policies.

Personal information of living family members

Please note that "living individuals" are hidden, except for their names.

If you want to see information in our family tree that relates to your family’s living members, the only way is to request from us an account (login) on our site, after which you will be able to access & view the information we hold. If you are unhappy about any aspect of it, you can use the Contact Us form to tell us about it.

There is another, much-larger group of data subjects: the living people in our family tree. Our Privacy Statement cares for them too.

Thank you in advance for any information that you're willing to share with us.

Contact Us form

If you send us inquiries via the Contact Us form, it is passed on to us by email. Your details in the email, of course, includes your email address, and we will not share this data with third parties.

This site is privately-funded & uses no commercial advertising, which means your personal data is not shared with any advertisers.

  • Cookies

This website uses cookies. Cookies do not harm your computer, and do not contain viruses. They are small text files that are stored on your computer by your browser, and perform important functions in the operation of this site.

Most of the cookies we use are “session cookies”, and are automatically deleted when you close your browser. Other cookies remain stored on your device until you delete them. These cookies allow us to recognize your browser the next time you visit, and restore some of your preferences (such as your preferred language).

You can configure your browser settings so that you are informed about the setting of cookies, and allow cookies only in certain cases. Disabling cookies will limit the functionality of this website.

What happens when you block cookies

The two most visible outcomes from blocking cookies are:

You will be unable to login successfully, because your login details are normally stored in a cookie. You will be treated as an anonymous browser, and access to the records of living people will be denied.

The GDPR cookie consent & privacy preferences footer bar will appear on every page you visit, because your GDPR consent status would normally be stored in some of the blocked cookies. On every page, you will be treated as a new visitor, and Agreeing or Dismissing the cookie consent bar will have no effect
