    Notes
    • (Research):Nether Cerne, Nr Dorchester, 28 August 1846
.... Mrs Motyer is increasing in mischievousness as the years increase. Bryant reports that although she has the Duke's allowance of 2s a week of pay beside she is pulling down the thatch and boards of the house in which he has her domiciled and burning them and he fears she will some day set him on fire as her cottage adjoins.
She has another freak at times when Bryant is away; she hires a cart and puts her bed and moveables into it and goes up to Swyre and attempts to take forcible possession of the as yet unfinished cottages, from which position a constable is always necessary to dislodge her. I have advised Bryant to take the necessary legal steps to remover her to the Union. The son is at present on some distant expedition but he occasionally appears for a day or two, commonly intoxicated; he beats his poor wife and then sets out again. I suppose he will not escape the law eventually though his cunning may save him for a time ..
      (from J.B. Knight)

      Bridport, 24th September 1846
Sir,At the request of Mr John Bryant of Barwick and at the suggestion of Mr J.B. Knight I am to write to you respecting a female called Patience Motyer. It appears that she has been some time residing in a cottage within the farmyard in the occupation of Mr John Bryant;- that notwithstanding repeated remonstrances, she will bring her bed down stairs and place it near to the fire place and endangering her own life and the whole farm buildings;- that her own clothes have caught fire several times in the last few weeks;- that Mr Bryant ordered his dairyman to bring two carts of coals for her use;- that she refused to receive the coals;- that Mr Bryant has supplied her with faggots & gorse to the full extent of her wants, but that she has pulled down all the thatch and timber even to the wall plate of two fuel houses near her cottage;- that under my advice Mr Bryant withheld her weekly pay in order to induce her to quit without further trouble, promising it to her on compliance; that Mr Bryant offered to pay 3/- a week to the woman's daughter Ann Coombs to receiver her into her cottage and take care of her. The daughter is willing to do this and treat her mother with affection but the mother refuses to live with her daughter. The woman applied for relief to the office of the Union and received an order to be admitted to the union workhouse but now refuses to go there. Considering it quite essential for the safety of Mr Bryant's family & the farm buildings occupied by him I advised him to proceed to obtain possession of the cottage under the Small Tenants Act & I find that he has obtained an order which will enable him with the assistance of a constable to remove the woman from the premises on the 6th of the coming month. Mr Bryant is a kind-hearted man & will I am satisfied do everything that humanity requires but it is essential to get rid of this troublesome old woman whose conduct keeps Mrs Bryant in a state of nervous excitement and compels her to sit up for hours at night watching the light in the cottage from a window in the Farm House.

      I am sir,
      Your obedient servant,
      E Nichollets(Mr Bryant's solicitor)

Dear Sir,The Duke approves of Mr Barnes's estimate of £728 for the Six Cottages at Swyre as stated in Mr Barnes's letter of 2nd instant to you.
      I am Sir,
      Yours truly,
      Christopher Hardy
      (to J.B. Knight)

      Dorchester, August 2nd 1849
Dear Sir,I find (on receiving Gale's list of prices*) that the cost of erecting the Six Cottages with porches, Back Buildings, Bakehouse with oven and table, including clothes posts, railing, carriage and all extras will be £728 at which some I will undertake to complete the work in a substantial and satisfactory manner.
The back foundations will require to be 4 foot deep.
      I am sir,
      Your obedient servant,
      John Barnes
      (to J.B. Knight)

This row of cottages is what is now 16-21 Swyre. The design was based on a design of the Duke's for some cottages on his estates in Bedfordshire. The design was changed, particularly at the instance of John Baverstock Knight, the Duke's under-steward in Dorset. The changes include replacing gable ends with a hipped roof offering more protection against the weather, and having each cottage with a separate entrance rather than one serving a pair of cottages.
