Bairnsdale is located on the river flats of the Mitchell River , near where the Mitchell River flows into Lake King . Bairnsdale is the commercial centre for the East Gippsland region and the seat of local government for the Shire of East Gippsland . The origin of the city's name is uncertain, however it is believed to have been derived from the name of the property owned by pioneer settler Archibald Macleod.
